Balance Method for Neuromuscular Medicine and Pain Management
Feb 06
2009
San Jose
Richard Tan, OMD, LAc 32 pending hours/CEUs

DAY 1 - INSTANT PAIN RELIEF WITH THE BALANCE METHOD

This course provides the basic training on the Five Systems of the Balance Method. In the Balance Method, distal points are used exclusively, meaning that no local points are needled to balance a pain-related pathology. The systems are rooted in the concept of healing the body by balancing meridians. This balance is explained using I-Ching theory. A detailed and logical discussion of the eight trigrams will form the foundation of the class. The Biao-Li, Zang-Fu and Chinese Clock relationships can all be explained by the Five Systems. The systems contain logical processes for determination of the meridian to needle and an easy-to-use dynamic format to outline the treatment.
A detailed explanation of the Mirroring and Imaging Formats will be explained to assist participants in effective point selection. Dr. Tan will always share numerous case studies from his clinical practice to assist participants in understanding the Balance Method. The cases will be resolved in 3 easy steps: First, the meridian is identified which is the cause of the pain or disorder. Second, the meridians are chosen which will balance the affected meridian(s). Third, the points are chosen along the meridians which will be needled. Finally, hands-on demonstrations will allow attendees to see the Balance Method in a practical format.

DAY 2 - GLOBAL BALANCE FOR NEUROMUSCULAR DISORDERS

In this course, Dr. Tan will expand on the application of the Balance Method and expand on the relationships of the channels to the hexagrams of the I-Ching. By exploring these connections, practitioners will learn how to develop simple treatments that affect the body at a deep energetic level. Students will be able to apply the concepts immediately in practice and develop effective treatments for instant pain relief of neuromuscular disorders. Dr. Tan will discuss how to treat pain that runs along entire meridian lines and how to treat these disorders with minimal needles.
Cases and treatments will be discussed based on an in-depth look at the 12 meridians in relation to Ba Gua theory. There will be a discussion on difficult cases and hands-on demonstration of the practical application of Dr. Tan’s treatments.

DAY 3 - TREATING PAIN WITH THE SEASONAL BALANCE METHOD

In this course, Dr. Tan will expand the application of the Balance Method and discuss Four-Segment Timing. This is an advanced method of point selection based on the rhythms of nature and the five shu-transporting points. Our sleep cycles, hormonal levels and mental states are all affected by cyclical rhythms. Dr. Tan discusses the connection between meridian points and these rhythms of our body. With this knowledge, different points will be more effective at various times of the day and during various seasons. In addition, he will expand his discussion of the I-Ching and discuss how we can create seasonal balance by using the hexagram of the current season to balance the hexagram associated with an affected meridian. This system is effective for a variety of pain disorders and physical injuries. As always, case studies will be discussed to help assist participants in a thorough understanding of this advanced system.

DAY 4 - TWELVE MAGICAL POINTS FOR COMPLICATED PAIN DISORDERS

In this course, Dr. Tan will provide an in-depth explanation of his Strategy of Twelve Magical Points designed regulate all 12 meridians. This strategy is ideal for patients with complicated disorders who may manifest with pain in the entire body. It is also very effective for overlapping pain disorders. The strategy was designed specifically for complicated pathological conditions by applying a unique combination of all twelve meridians, the Five Transporting Points, the Imaging Format, Four Segment Timing, and the Yin/Yang Balancing Dynamic. Each of these concepts will be discussed in detail in order to provide a clear understanding of the methodology behind the strategy.
Specifically, three Shu Points are selected by regions on each limb. The regions are based on a format utilizing the Five Shu Point relationship to Four Segment Timing. This placement of the Shu Points begin with the Jing-Well points at the tips of the fingers and toes and end with the He-Sea points at the knees and elbows. This allows for the whole body to be treated by combining the Imaging Format with the Shu Points. The arrangement of the Yin/Yang Balancing Dynamic creates a model of balance for the body, sets the symmetrical pattern into motion, and shifts the body from a state of imbalance to balance. There are 16 possible patterns which can be used when designing a treatment plan. These patterns will be discussed in terms of case studies to help assist applicants in the practical application of this method.

Rui Li, MD (China) 16 pending hours/CEUs

This course will discuss the 12 meridians and 8 extra meridians in depth. Special emphasis will be given to specific points, especially five shu points, yuan point, and the convergent points. Dr. Li will discuss his understanding of specific point locations according to the patient's condition. He believes that point locations vary on different diseases and different individuals; therefore, point location should be done by palpation for the best results.
Dr. Li received his Bachelor's degree in Acupuncture and Moxibustion from the Tianjin University of TCM in 1986 and later a PhD degree in TCM Medical History and Scholastic Studies from the Beijing Univeristy of Chinese Medicine. He has devoted his work into the theoretical study and clinical applications of acupuncture. His academic emphasis is using the most traditional theories in Chinese medicine, with guidance from the Neijing, to explore ancient TCM philosophy. Through this, he aims to dig deep into the essence of traditional Chinese medicine from its purest and most ancient source. He also has a special understanding of the theory of the specific points, most especially the clinical applications of the Five Shu Points. He believes that the five shu points has a close relation with the five viscera diseases and five elements.
