Employee or own practice — which is more common?

It's a fair question to have underneath any income figure you read — because the honest answer changes what those official numbers even mean.

Most acupuncturists actually run their own practice rather than work as someone's employee, especially past the first few years. But here's the catch: the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics — the government's own wage survey — only counts salaried/employed acupuncturists (people on a clinic's, hospital's, or school's payroll). Self-employed practitioners running their own business aren't counted at all. So when you see a figure like "7,830 employed acupuncturists nationwide" (BLS, May 2025 data), that's understating the real size of the profession — a large share of practitioners simply aren't in that dataset.

This lines up with the typical career arc: most practitioners start as an employee or associate in years 1–2 while building clinical confidence and a patient base, then shift toward solo practice or partnership by years 3–5, and many eventually own a clinic outright by year 5+. Employment is common early on; ownership becomes more common — and often more lucrative — over time.
