What is the CALE, and how hard is it?
The CALE — California Acupuncture Licensing Examination — is the test the California Acupuncture Board requires before you can practice as a licensed acupuncturist (L. Ac. ) in the state. It's offered in Mandarin, Korean, and English, so a student who trained in Chinese can sit the exam in Chinese too — as of our last check of the Board's own page (checked 08/2026), there's no sign that's changing.

That's genuinely different from the national certifying body, NCBAHM (formerly NCCAOM), which most other states rely on and which has been English-only since 2024 — so if you're wondering "will I have to test in English," the honest answer depends on which exam and which state.
"How hard is it" is really a question about pass rates — and the fair way to look at those is over several years, not one semester, because a small graduating class can swing wildly on a single retake.
| School (Northern CA) | 2021–2025 test-takers (N) | First-time pass rate |
|---|---|---|
| Five Branches University | 169 | 85.8% |
| Acupuncture & Integrative Medicine College, Berkeley | 99 | 82.8% |
| Academy of Chinese Culture & Health Sciences | 88 | 83% |
| California University–Silicon Valley | 15 | 73.3% (highly volatile — ~2/yr average cohort) |

The count matters as much as the percentage: a school testing 30–40 people a year (like Five Branches) has a rate that moves only a couple points if one person retakes, while a school averaging 2 a year can swing 20–50 points from a single result.
Underneath the exam-difficulty question is usually a bigger one — not "can I pass a test" but "will years of study actually lead somewhere real." What part of that feels most uncertain to you right now?
