California costs the most — why do so many people still study there?

"Isn't California just too expensive to study TCM in?" — it's a fair question, especially with San Jose and Santa Cruz rents in the mix. But the honest answer is that California's wage ceiling and its concentration of real employers are why the cost keeps making sense for so many.

Start with what the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics actually reports for the occupation (OEWS code 29-1291, May 2025 data, last checked 07/18/2026):

California's top end is the widest of any state tracked — established practitioners there out-earn the national 90th percentile by roughly $25,000. (These BLS figures cover salaried employees only, not private-practice income, which runs its own separate range.)

Three things beyond the wage number pull people to study there anyway:

• Density of schools and employers — California has more accredited TCM schools than any other state, so no other market has this much peer competition or this much institutional infrastructure.
• Real hospital integration — UCSF's Osher Center, Stanford's Center for Integrative Medicine, and San Francisco's Chinese Hospital all run standing acupuncture services (per the schools' own published overviews, checked 07/14/2026) — a career track distinct from private practice, with salaried employment and physician collaboration.
• Higher local minimum wages offset part-time costs — San Jose's ordinance minimum was $18.45/hr and Sunnyvale's $19.50/hr as of the city pages we checked in 07/2026 (both above the state's own $16.90/hr) — worth confirming on the city's own page since these adjust annually.

None of this erases the cost question — high wages and high living costs genuinely travel together, and that trade-off is worth weighing against a lower-cost state honestly. What matters more to you right now: the earning ceiling, or keeping costs down while you study?
