BAD ZURZACH, Switzerland — Five Branches University Professor Brandt Stickley led a two-day clinical workshop exploring Chinese medical psychology, trauma, and Shen-Hammer Pulse Diagnosis during the international acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine gathering held in Bad Zurzach, Switzerland.

The August 15–16 workshop brought together an unusual combination of disciplines: classical Chinese medicine, pulse diagnosis, psychology, trauma-informed care, psychosomatic medicine, neuroscience, mindfulness, and somatic approaches to health.

At the center of the program was a fundamental concept: understanding the patient as a whole person rather than separating physical, psychological, emotional, and social health into unrelated categories.

Reading More Through the Pulse

Stickley is a direct lineage holder and senior certified teacher of the Shen-Hammer Pulse Diagnosis System, a comprehensive approach to Chinese pulse diagnosis developed through the work of Dr. Leon Hammer.

After more than 25 years of working closely with Dr. Hammer and his teachings, Stickley has continued to develop and teach the relationship among Chinese medicine, psychology, classical medicine, and pulse diagnosis.

During the Switzerland workshop, participants learned to recognize different pulse qualities and examine their significance through the physiological and pathological frameworks of Chinese medicine.

Rather than approaching the pulse as a collection of isolated diagnostic findings, the workshop encouraged practitioners to consider how pulse information may contribute to a more complete understanding of an individual’s overall clinical presentation.

Chinese Medicine, Psychology and Trauma

Another major focus of the workshop was Chinese medical psychology and trauma.

Participants explored Chinese medicine as a framework for examining interactions among physical health, emotional experience, psychological stress, and the social environment.

The workshop also introduced contemporary perspectives from psychosomatic medicine, neuroscience, mindfulness practices, and somatic psychology, examining how these ideas can enter into dialogue with classical Chinese medical concepts.

By bringing these disciplines together, the program encouraged practitioners to consider more integrative approaches when working with individuals experiencing the effects of trauma or psychological distress.

From Classical Theory to Hands-On Practice

Each day combined classroom instruction with practical pulse diagnosis training.

Participants moved between discussions of Chinese medicine psychology and trauma and hands-on practice with the Shen-Hammer Pulse Diagnosis System.

This structure gave practitioners an opportunity not only to examine theoretical relationships among mind, body, and emotion, but also to develop the tactile diagnostic skills required to apply those ideas in clinical practice.

Five Branches Faculty Contributing Internationally

The workshop was part of Five Branches University’s broader participation in the international gathering held August 13–16, 2026, in Bad Zurzach.

Five Branches University was a co-organizer of the event, which brought together practitioners, educators, researchers, and presenters from more than 15 countries for international discussion of Chinese medicine research, theory, and clinical practice. (Five Branches University)

Stickley’s participation also reflects a field he teaches within Five Branches University’s doctoral program. The University’s current academic curriculum includes a continuing series on Chinese Medicine Psychology and Trauma, and Five Branches identifies Stickley as a professor within its DAOM faculty. (Five Branches University)

His work in Switzerland provided an example of how specialized areas of Chinese medicine can contribute to a broader international conversation—connecting classical knowledge, clinical observation, psychological understanding, and contemporary approaches to whole-person care.

Five Branches University is proud to support faculty participation in international academic exchange and the continued development of Chinese medicine education and clinical practice worldwide.

Among the conference highlights was keynote speaker Dr. Mazin Al-Khafaji, an internationally recognized clinician and educator whose work has helped advance the specialized field of Chinese medicine dermatology.

For more than three decades, Dr. Al-Khafaji has developed and taught a distinctive clinical approach integrating traditional Chinese herbal medicine with the diagnosis and treatment of dermatological conditions. Through his clinical practice and teaching, he has shared his experience with thousands of practitioners internationally.

His presentation was particularly relevant to one of the conference’s central areas of discussion: the expanding relationship between Traditional Chinese Medicine, acupuncture, dermatology, and contemporary aesthetic medicine.

Chinese medicine dermatology provides a meaningful example of how traditional medical knowledge can continue to develop within highly specialized areas of modern clinical practice. Dr. Al-Khafaji’s decades of clinical experience demonstrate how classical Chinese medicine principles can be applied, studied, refined, and shared within an international professional community.

The conference took place August 13–16, 2026, in Bad Zurzach, Switzerland, with Five Branches University serving as one of the co-organizing institutions.

For Five Branches University, participation in international academic gatherings such as this extends beyond a single conference. It creates opportunities for faculty, alumni, students, researchers, and practitioners to exchange ideas across countries and disciplines while strengthening the global presence of Traditional Chinese Medicine education.

The gathering in Switzerland provided another example of how Chinese medicine continues to cross borders—connecting traditional knowledge with new clinical applications, international research, and an increasingly global community of practitioners.

Five Branches University is proud to participate in this international exchange and to support the continued development and worldwide advancement of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Dr. Jacquelyn Van Deusen-Byrd is a trailblazer in the integration of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) within public health and Western clinical environments. Through her dedicated work with Santa Cruz County, she champions TCM not merely as an “alternative,” but as an essential complementary practice to the Western medical model.

She developed these opportunities for integration through the Santa Cruz Health Center, the Watsonville Health Center, and the Homeless Person’s Health Project (HPHP). Collectively, these programs showcase the efficacy of TCM when applied to at-risk and underserved populations who often fall through the cracks of the healthcare system.

Today, these initiatives provide vital care to Santa Cruz County residents while offering educational opportunities and career pathways for TCM students. As Dr. Byrd shares:

“Acupuncture provides physical and mental health relief, and our patients are very grateful.”

Five Branches students have the unique opportunity to witness Dr. Byrd’s impact firsthand through externships at HPHP. For those in the classroom this summer, she will bring her extensive field expertise to the following courses: Public Health and Epidemiology, Herbology II, Herb-Pharm Interactions, and Herbal First Aid.

When: September 17th, 2025 – All Day

In 1952, President Harry S. Truman signed a bill that moved I Am an American Day from the third Sunday in May to September 17. Truman did so in order for the holiday to coincide with the date of the signing of the U.S. Constitution in 1787. Congress renamed the holiday Citizenship Day.

A joint resolution passed in 1956 requested that the president proclaim the week beginning September 17 and ending September 23 each year as Constitution Week. In 2004, Senator Robert C. Byrd of West Virginia entered an amendment to the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2005 to change the name of the September 17 holiday to Constitution Day and Citizenship Day. The purpose of Constitution Day and Citizenship Day is to commemorate the creation and signing of the s
upreme law of the land and to honor and celebrate the privileges and responsibilities of U.S. citizenship for both native-born and naturalized citizens.

Meet Alex Lintner—a biologist, farmer, and community organizer with a passion for the earth. After years dedicated to Environmental Justice and Climate Solutions in Vermont, Alex’s journey with Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) began while seeking relief for her own health issues.

“With my first exposure to TCM, I started connecting it to my work in agroecology and environmental advocacy. I began to see TCM as a form of ecological farming for the human body, grounded in the understanding that human health is inseparable from the health of the biosphere,” Alex shares.

Now, as a first-term student at Five Branches University, Alex is inspired daily by the natural beauty surrounding our Santa Cruz campus, where she immerses herself in the connection between nature and healing.
