So the true size of the profession is larger than 7,830, and the wage spread ($38,830–$161,470 at the 10th–90th percentile) describes what someone earns as an employee, not what an owner nets after running their own clinic — which tends to be lower in the early years while a practice is building, and can climb higher once it's established, since there's no ceiling on what your own patient base can generate. That's part of why the published three-stage career trajectory (associate → independent → owner) is worth reading alongside these BLS numbers rather than in place of them — it's the piece that speaks to the self-employed path this data can't see.
