Recap: Wisconsin (American) Ginseng AOM Treatment & Medical Research Seminar

Five Branches University had the pleasure of hosting the Wisconsin (American) Ginseng AOM Treatment & Medical Research seminar. The seminar discussed farming practices and the uses of the Wisconsin Ginseng, a premium American ginseng variety, within Acupuncture and Oriental Medical. Robert Kaldunski, President of the Ginseng Board of Wisconsin who is a ginseng farmer himself started the presentation with the farming practices and growth cycle of ginseng. One surprising fact he shared with the audience was that after harvest farmers cannot regrow ginseng on the same soil, a phenomenon that is still unexplained.

Robert Yao, one of FBU faculty,  stated  this mysterious occurrence has already been pointed out by Shi Zhen Li, the 16th century author of “The Compendium of Materia Medica (Ben Cao Gang Mu)”, when discussing Dang Shen (another variation of ginseng), pointing out that cannot be regrown in the same area.

The  next presenter, Dr. Eric Vandenhouten (Ph.D, D.O.M, L.Ac), President of the International Brand Ambassador of the Ginseng Board of Wisconsin, shared several research articles on the effects of American Ginseng in the treatment of neurological and cardiovascular conditions as well as its influence on the immune system and metabolism. As most of the research was done in Asia, he encouraged the participating students and practitioners to conduct further research on the Medicinal Properties of American Ginseng in the U.S.

The last presenter was Dr. Jeffrey Pang, Senior Professor and Head of the Theory and Herbology Department at Five Branches University. Dr. Pang who is a living example for the daily use of American Ginseng and who has retained his youthful looks and agility despite his advanced age. Dr. Pang,  author of several Chinese Medicine Dietetics books, shared with the audience simple recipes, showing how one can incorporate American Ginseng in their daily diet.

Recordings of the seminar will be available at a later date.

Sutter Hospital Residency Open to DAOM, DTCM, and Bridge Students

Sutter Bay Hospitals and the International Center for Integrative Medicine (ICIM) in Oakland and Berkeley, California, offer a two-year or one trimester hospital based clinical training program to Five Branches University students.

2023 Vietnam Externship: An Enriching Experience in Vietnam

During April this year, under the guidance of our faculty member, Dr. Phu Tran, 24 of our students embarked on their journey for their 2-week externship in Vietnam.

One of the students expressed, “This experience has been an eye opener for me, seeing cases that we normally only read from our books, practicing needling patients who are different in demographics and diseases have been such an enriching learning experience.”

Five Branches is honored to have provided this opportunity for our students, and we express our gratitude to Dr. Tran, as well as the translators, administrators, local doctors, and all staff and participating externs who have made this trip a success. We look forward to providing another opportunity like this again in the near future.

Acupuncture Fever—the Road to Legalization in California a documentary by Doug Dearth

Five Branches University is the proud sponsor of the first English language documentary on the journey to legalization of the practice of Acupuncture in the State of California; Acupuncture Fever—the Road to Legalization in California a documentary by Doug Dearth.

Currently there are over 19,000 acupuncturists in California, which account for about a third of the number of acupuncturists in the United States. Forty years ago, legalizing Acupuncture in California was not an easy task.

Five Branches University was one of the first TCM schools to be accredited to offer a Master’s and Doctorate degrees in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).  Today, most insurance companies in California cover acupuncture services. Stanford, UCSF, UCLA, Veterans Administration Medical Center, Kaiser, and many more hospitals, have Five Branches University Alumni employed in their acupuncture clinics

A Trailer to the film can be found here. And the full film can be found in English and with Chinese Subtitles

Gratitude to Participants of the First On-Campus Event of 2023

An Afternoon Filled with the Opportunity to Learn & Experience

Five Branches University would like to give a big thank you to all who participated in our first on-campus event of the year! We enjoyed various activities with our guests. We would like to thank all of our staff, faculty, and volunteers for bringing this to fruition.

We were grateful for the great questions and interactions from those who participated in our Degree Program Open House and Admissions Q&A.

Besides the general open house, we had passionate faculty such as Dr. Samson Cheung and Dr. Juan Li who gave Mini TCM Lectures, enabling our guests to experience what it is like to be a student at Five Branches.

Of course, our event would not have been complete without our workshop-leading instructors, Thomas Dicklin for our Santa Cruz Campus and Thomas Leichardt for our San Jose Campus. Our guests enjoyed guided medical qi-gong sessions with them and experienced exercise that supports energetic healing.

Last but certainly not least, our guests received complimentary TCM diagnoses and treatments from our Senior interns and Senior professors, while our interns gained even more hands-on experience through this meaningful opportunity.

Thank you again to all participants, staff, faculty, and volunteers for coming together to make this event possible. If you have missed this event, we welcome you to join our upcoming online Info Session happening on March 30th. For more information and signup details, click here

We will also be having another on-campus event in a few months, so please stay tuned for more announcements!

FBU Students Experience Hands-on Learning in Needle Camp

Needling's in Session!

For over a year now, Five Branches University has been operating weekend Needle Camps at both the San Jose and Santa Cruz campuses. The Needle Camps started with the initiative of one of FBU’s acupuncture class faculty, Tom Dicklin. He was concerned that the online delivery of acupuncture classes, forced by the pandemic, hindered the competency of his students. His idea was met with great enthusiasm by the Academic Dean, Joanna Zhao. Several Needle Camps were offered to Five Branches students free of charge. Prof. Zhao along with other Five Branches faculty supervised the students as they practiced acupuncture point location and needling techniques. Recently, another FBU faculty member, Shawn Smolinski, volunteered to provide a few lunchtime training sessions to review adjacent acupuncture techniques such as electro-acupuncture, Gua Sha, and cupping. He also addressed manual Tuina massage techniques and protocols. Kimberly Duhlmann, from the Santa Cruz Student Council, reported that “students were so grateful to have additional hands-on practice time as we come out of strictly online learning”.
